| Who
may benefit from using a MediFlexor™?
Following
an operation:
The effects of an anaesthetic can increase the risk of DVT. When combined
with reduced mobility such as following a leg fracture, or hip or knee
replacement surgery, the risk may increase further. While the patient
is recuperating at home for 6 to 8 weeks following such an operation their
ambulatory capacity is restricted. As a result they may not ambulate sufficiently
or regularly enough in order to appropriately activate the ‘calf
muscle pump’.
The
aged person:
In nursing homes or special accommodation, where the elderly person may
be unable to ambulate safely on their own and as a result may remain seated
for extended periods as busy staff attend to other patients’ needs.
The reduced ambulatory capacity in this situation may predispose to DVT
formation due to insufficient ‘calf muscle pump’ activation.
The
long distance traveller:
The incidence of DVT associated with long haul flights has been well documented
recently. If a person is seated for a prolonged period and regular walking
is not practical or possible, there may be an increased risk of DVT as
blood can begin to slow or pool in the veins of the lower leg due to insufficient
activation of the ‘calf muscle pump’.
The
travelling athlete:
Athletic travellers may be prone to DVT when they find themselves in a
confined seated position for a lengthy duration. As the athlete has a
slower resting heart rate than the average person, blood is moved less
frequently through their venous system while resting. Prolonged sitting
combined with a reduction in leg movement may predispose to blood stilling
or pooling in the deep veins (a precursor to DVT).
The
sedentary worker:
Computer operators or call centre staff who find themselves seated for
many hours and therefore not ambulating regularly, may find themselves
predisposed to the same problems due to a reduction in exercise capacity
during the work period.
Pregnancy:
Varicose veins and leg circulatory problems are common in pregnancy. DVT
may also be a higher risk at this time. Regular activation of the ‘calf
muscle pump’ is important to help circulation in the legs. If you
are seated for long periods and not able to walk regularly, the Mediflexor™
will enable you to activate the ‘calf muscle pump’ on a regular
basis. |
